One of this weeks visiting musicians remarked that when they were at the club last, just a few short weeks ago, the sun was streaming in through the side door.
How quickly the nights begin to draw in. Still, as we begin to say goodbye to summer we can look forward to Thursday autumn evenings spent in the warm company of fellow music lovers at the Cross Keys.
It was good to see Wirralites John Williams and Phil Chisnall back again. John brought his new toy – a lovely tenor guitar upon which he performed a great set of songs that adapted really well to this beautiful four-stringed instrument.
Phil always reminds me of Clapton, both in looks and his style. Tonight he delivered some great bluesy numbers. Both these guys are residents at the Wirral Folk Club. Jayne and I have promised ourselves a visit one of these Sundays.
Another visitor promoting another club was Dave Hytch who runs the fortnightly Monday night club at the Oak in Hendre. Tonight Dave enlisted Tom’s assistance on ‘Mandolin Man’ and ‘Louise’, both songs that Tom had never heard before, not that you’ve guessed from the excellent performance.
Tom was in demand tonight as a multi instrumentalist including the violin when he accompanied Steven on ‘The Stable Song’. There was also a little extra curricular entertainment when he and Lynda had an on-stage domestic over the key of their first song ‘The Sound of Silence’, although they did seem to still be talking to one another afterwards!
There were sets from regulars John Ryder, Richard and myself. Also from Peter who is fast becoming a regular. Peter, who has become known here for his Denveresque style opened with John Denver’s ‘Jet Plane’ followed by Tom Paxton’s ‘Comedians and Angels’.
We always love seeing Skeet at the club. Tonight he delivered two tunes in his fabulous finger-picking style, ‘Cariad’ and ‘The Peace Song’, both of which he recently recorded for part of ‘The Narrow Boat Sessions’ (video below). And then by way of contrast, for the evening finale, he performed a brilliant rendition of Yazoo’s ‘Only You’
See y’all next week!
